Entering Mouldwood Depths and surviving the darkness

Stay in the dark too long in Mouldwood Depths, and Ori dies. This Ori and the Will of the Wisps mouldwood depths guide explains how to move between light sources, open the keystone gates, and reach Flash. Follow this Ori and the Will of the Wisps mouldwood depths walkthrough to keep your exploration moving toward Mora and the Eyes of the Forest.

The area rewards careful movement: glowing plants, released insects, and shafts of light provide safe places along otherwise dangerous routes. Before chasing a collectible, identify the light source that will let you return.

For illustrated route references, consult IGN’s Mouldwood Depths walkthrough and collectible guide. The directions below use environmental landmarks so you can follow along without relying on screenshots.

Start at the giant spider sculpture

Once air is flowing in front of the giant spider sculpture in Ori and the Will of the Wisps mouldwood depths, glide right to the far end of the section to collect the Splinter Spirit Shard. Then return to the airflow and descend.

At the bottom right, a large Spirit Light Container provides an optional detour. Collect it, use the airflow to regain height, and glide left into the route through the depths.

Player experience: The supplied playthrough shows the Moki opening the entrance after explaining that Kwolok sent them. It also includes considerable collectible cleanup before entering. Those detours are part of that player’s run; they do not establish additional entry requirements.

Read the light before moving

Light sourceWhat the walkthrough establishesPractical approach
Glowing plantsTheir light provides safety along dark passagesLocate the next illuminated landing before jumping
Released glowing insectsThey travel along routes through darknessFollow their movement instead of rushing ahead
Overhead light shaftsPurple bugs can obstruct themClear the bugs before taking the passage below
FlashIt creates an equippable aura of lightUse it when exploring dark routes after acquisition

A good approach is to treat each lit platform as a planning stop. Check your next jump, grapple point, or insect before leaving it.

Collecting the first two keystones

The opening objective in this Ori and the Will of the Wisps mouldwood depths route is to gather two keystones and open the first gate.

Follow the descending passage down and right until you reach a grapple point. Grapple to it, then use the descending pole to jump left onto the wall. Climb up for a large Spirit Light Container before returning below.

Continue right to another grapple point. Use its descending pole to climb up and collect Gorlek Ore, then drop back to the main route.

The keystones lie along two separate light-guided paths:

ObjectiveRoute landmarksReturn route
First keystoneContinue right, grapple upward, and strike the yellow glowing bulbFollow its insect down and left; release another insect from the bulb near the keystone
Second keystoneGo right and down, traveling between glowing plant clustersFollow the route right, down, and left; strike the nearby bulb to release a guiding insect
First keystone gateReturn with both keystonesOpen the gate and continue upward

The second route tests movement between stationary lights. Staying in darkness too long is fatal, so a good approach is to pause at each glowing cluster and line up the next movement.

Keep the outbound and return bulbs separate in your mind. Releasing the insect that takes you to a keystone does not replace the return insect described at the end of that path.

With both keystones collected, open the gate and begin climbing toward the next section.

Reaching the Spirit Tree and unlocking Flash

Finding Flash changes how you explore the Ori and the Will of the Wisps mouldwood depths area: you gain an aura of light that you can equip.

Clear the overhead light

Beyond the gate, climb and grapple upward, then continue right until you reach a roof with light shining through it.

Destroy the purple bug blocking the light, grapple to the blue point, and jump across to destroy the other bug. Clearing both allows light to reach the passage underneath.

Double back to the lower route and head right. Move through the dark gaps into the newly exposed light shafts.

In the chamber with insects descending from above, grapple to pull the pole down. Hold onto it, then Bash off an insect to reach the upper-right ledge and its large Spirit Light Container.

Reach the Spirit Well

Drop to the light below and dash right to the next illuminated spot. Use the jump pad, then dash right near the top of the jump to reach a yellow light source.

Dash right again to another illuminated jump pad. Bounce upward and dash left near the top of the arc to reach the Spirit Well. Save here before continuing.

This stretch combines several movements in sequence. A good approach is to focus on landing in light, then prepare the next jump from that position.

Follow the insects to Flash

Explore the area southwest of the Spirit Well. Head down and right to a glowing sack, destroy it, and follow the released insect down and around to a glowing jump pad.

Use the pad to reach the shrine on the left. A nearby grapple point and descending pole also provide a route to a Life Cell Fragment: jump toward the far-right wall, climb quickly, and jump left to the green fragment.

Return to the jump pad and travel right between light sources. When flying insects begin darting toward Ori, Bash off them to reach the energy crystal formation, then Bash upward again.

Destroy the glowing sack above and follow its insect east to the Spirit Tree. Absorb the tree’s spirit to obtain Flash.

Optional collectibles, the shortcut gate, and exploration

With Flash acquired, this Ori and the Will of the Wisps mouldwood depths walkthrough opens into several useful detours. Keep the boss route in mind while collecting nearby upgrades.

Collect Spirit Surge and meet Lupo

From the Flash tree, head right, activate Flash, and climb to a Giant Spirit Light Container.

Return to the darting insects, drop down, and follow the path west. From the yellow light at the bottom, jump toward the blue grapple point on the left. Continue through the grapple points and climb around to the Spirit Surge Spirit Shard.

Return to that yellow light and go right instead. Grapple between the points, then reach the illuminated area on the right to find Lupo, who sells the area map.

Collectible or landmarkRoute referenceWhat to do
Giant Spirit Light ContainerRight of the Flash treeActivate Flash and climb
Spirit SurgeWest of the darting insects, beyond the lower yellow lightFollow the blue grapple points
LupoRight of the lower yellow lightGrapple toward his illuminated location
Trial pedestalAbove the darting-insect section, along the left routeBash upward, take the left grapple route, and activate it
Mysterious SeedElevated route before MoraTraverse the hanging structures and continue west

Open the second keystone gate

Bash upward through the flying-insect section again. Where the earlier route led right, take the left route through two grapple points to activate the pedestal.

Continue toward the next keystone area. Bash upward twice, climb to the glowing bulb, and strike it to release an insect.

Follow that insect and collect the two keystones along its path. Continue west to the door and open it. This gate creates a shortcut back toward the beginning of the area.

Find the Mysterious Seed

Return to the ledge where you released the insect for these keystones. The hanging structures and surrounding walls provide an upward detour to another Life Cell Fragment.

For the seed route, return below and go right with Flash active. Drop through the platform and traverse the hanging structures and walls upward. Once over the top, head west to the Mysterious Seed.

Return from the seed route and take the right branch. Grapple, dash between the hanging structure and jump pad, then jump left and destroy the barrier leading to the Spirit Well. Save before approaching Mora.

Leave cleanup for a return visit

IGN’s post-game cleanup section identifies additional targets:

  • Gorlek Ore: Southwest of the Mouldwood Depths Spirit Well.
  • Energy Cell Fragment: Begin the route by swimming south in the southwest water, then heading east.

Defeating Mora and completing Breaking the Mould

The main objective of the Ori and the Will of the Wisps mouldwood depths route concludes with Mora. Return through the passage opened near the Spirit Well and head right to trigger the encounter.

Attack the head and respond to her tells

Mora’s head takes damage. Position your attacks accordingly, while watching for the movements that signal her next attack.

Encounter cueResponse described in the guide
Mora raises her front two legsDash out from underneath her
Mora uses the large laserGrapple into the air
The fight transitions after roughly a quarter of her health is removedClimb the right wall and escape upward
Mora launches projectiles or summons three smaller spidersDodge projectiles, defeat the smaller spiders, and continue attacking her head
Mora rears her entire body backHold onto a wall to avoid the incoming attack

A good approach is to prioritize a safe position when an attack begins, then resume damage when you can reach her head.

When the encounter shifts, climb the far-right wall, jump to the hanging structure, and Bash upward using the orange lanterns.

Continue upward through the walls and hanging structures, using jumps, dashes, and Bash to keep moving. At the top, dash and grapple right toward the eastern wall, then grapple left and continue west into the next arena.

The route demands movement as well as combat. Watch the next usable lantern or grapple point so you can transition between them without losing the path.

Finish the fight and return to the Glades

In the next arena, keep attacking Mora’s head while handling her projectiles and smaller spiders. When she pulls her whole body back, use a wall to avoid the incoming attack before resuming damage.

Defeating Mora releases Eyes of the Forest and completes Breaking the Mould.

For the next side-quest step described by IGN, use the nearby Spirit Well to travel to Wellspring Glades. Find Tuley by fanning the embers, gliding upward, and crossing toward the upper-right area. Speak with Tuley to update The Tree Keeper, then travel to the Silent Woods and speak with Kii.
